The search coil is available in various sizes and configurations to meet the exact requirements of each application. Experience has shown that each installation calls for individual consideration which is the reason for custom designed search coils. This provides greater flexibility and in some cases allows metal detection to be provided. In some applications a metal free area may be required for the system to operate properly. The following are the basic types of search coils available:

Plate Coil

The plate coil is a flat, single surface coil which is designed for mounting below a flat conveyor or chute, or inspecting thin material such as textiles or sheet rubber. With the coil mounted underneath, there is minimum interference with the product that is being inspected. A base plate or mounting angles are supplied for direct attachment to existing equipment. The plate coil is shielded on five sides to decrease the amount of external interference and is constructed to resist extreme weather conditions including high temperatures. Typically, coaxial connectors are provided for ease of installation, however other termination options are available. This type of coil has very high sensitivity detection at the coil surface with sensitivity decreasing as the distance from the coil surface increases.

The plate coil is available in any active surface length up to 72" to meet the exact requirements of each application. For installations which require active surface lengths greater than 72", multiple systems can be supplied to protect the overall width of the product.

Plate Contour Coil

The plate contour coil is a single surface coil which is designed for mounting below a trough type conveyor. With the coil mounted below the conveyor, there is minimum interference with the product that is being inspected and installation is accomplished without disassembling the conveyor belt.

The search coil windings are contained within a totally welded, high density polyethylene enclosure which offers superior corrosion resistance, high impact resistance and abrasion resistance. The environmentally tight enclosure is able to withstand high and low temperatures and is also UV stabilized to improve the durability in direct sunlight. Mounting rails of the same material are provided for direct attachment of the search coil to the conveyor stringers. The plate contour is shielded on five sides to decrease the amount of external interference. A NEMA 4 aluminum enclosure with a 3/4" KO and a terminal board mounted inside is provided for termination of the connecting cable.

This type of coil has very high sensitivity detection at the coil surface with sensitivity decreasing as the distance from the coil surface increases. The unique contour shape of the coil fits the outline of a trough type conveyor thereby maintaining uniform sensitivity along the edges of the conveyor. The plate contour coil is available in various sizes to meet the exact requirements of each application.

Spool Coil

The spool coil is a highly sensitive search coil fabricated with Fibercast® flanges at each end to mount directly into the process flow line for inspection of solids, liquids, and slurries including product in pneumatic conveying systems. The spool coil can be mounted vertically, horizontally or at any angle providing flexibility in the installation and a simplified approach to the automatic rejection of metal contaminants. The flanges are in accordance with ASA 150# Standards for Diameter and Bolt Circle. A non-metallic tube is utilized as a liner for the interior of the coil while the exterior is encased in an aluminum shell that provides maximum shielding against the effects of external interference. The spool coil is constructed to resist extreme weather conditions including high temperatures. A 3/4" aluminum conduit body with a terminal board mounted inside is provided for termination of the connecting cable.

The spool coil is available in various sizes to match the internal diameter of the existing pipe or tubing. Other configuration would include a cylinder coil which is a spool coil without flanges and a line coil which is a cylinder coil with short pieces of pipe in each end to mount directly into a pipeline application using Morris couplings.

Aperture Coil

The aperture coil is a single piece search coil which has an aperture opening in the center for detection of metal contaminants as products on a flat conveyor or thin materials pass through the opening. A base plate or mounting angles are supplied for direct attachment to existing equipment. The aperture coil is fabricated with a metal shell to shield against the effects of external interference and is constructed to resist extreme weather conditions including high temperatures. Typically, coaxial connectors are provided for ease of installation, however other termination options are available. This type of coil has very high sensitivity detection in the aperture opening.

Aperture Type Dual Plate Coils

The aperture type dual plate coil is similar to the aperture coil except that it consists of two plate coils mounted together utilizing spacers to form an aperture opening. This type of search coil provides the higher sensitivity of an aperture coil, but allows the unit to be disassembled for installation on a conveyor system which is a true advantage on an endless conveyor belt.
